Learning more about permaculture

What is permaculture and how can I learn more? To read one of our member's lengthy description, see What is Permaculture?

Permaculture is a whole-systems design approach or philosophy, rather than a set of specific techniques. The actual techniques used by permaculture practitioners, such as organic gardening and natural building, are described in many places; these learning resources are mostly for Permaculture itself.

Courses and Classes
To learn more about permaculture, ideally, take a permaculture design course (PDC). These are offered by various instructors in various places around the world, in a number of formats such as two week residental and multi week weekend courses. Tom Ward and Andy Fischer run a multi-week weekend course in southern Oregon, starting in January; details will be available on this site. There are courses in Eugene, Northern California and the Bay area as well.

Books
Highly recommended for the beginning reader on permaculture are Mollison's Introduction to Permaculture, Mollison’s Permaculture Design Manual, and Toby Hemenway's book Gaia's Garden.

Some other great books are The Earth Care Manual by Patrick Whitefield, and the Earth Users Guide to Permaculture, by Rosemary Morrow

Magazines
There is a national magazine called the Permaculture Activist, issued more or less monthly. It can be found at alternative magazine racks (including the Ashland Co-op) when it comes out, or you can get a subscription, see the Permaculture Acticist online site .

Online
There are several permaculture online email groups, such as Permaculture on ibiblio and Open permaculture.
